Donald Trump congratulates Boris Johnson by TWEET on his crushing UK election win

Donald Trump has congratulated his friend and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on his huge election win.

‘Looking like a big win for Boris in the U.K.!’ Trump tweeted late Thursday night.

Trump’s tweet came soon after Johnson said it looked like his Conservative Party had won ‘a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done’ in the country’s general election.

His Conservative Party appeared to be on course to win a solid majority of seats in Britain’s Parliament – a decisive outcome to a Brexit-dominated election that should allow Johnson to fulfill his plan to take the U.K. out of the European Union next month.

Trump’s message came just days after Johnson admitted he had not spoken to the U.S. President since the ‘gossipgate’ row at this month’s NATO summit.

Footage emerged of Johnson with Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron at a NATO reception during which the trio appeared to be gossiping about an impromptu 45-minute press conference held by Trump.

Trudeau had joked that officials’ ‘jaws hit the floor’ at the performance.

The video drew a furious response from Trump who branded the Canadian PM ‘two-faced’ – but he stopped short of criticizing Johnson.

Johnson later denied that he had been caught making fun of Trump in the embarrassing ‘hot mic’ incident.

In the lead up to the UK election, Johnson appeared to be trying to minimize his public contact with Trump amid fears that ties to him could be an electoral liability.

The pair held talks behind closed doors and were only pictured together once at the summit held earlier this month.

Trump is considered to be deeply unpopular in the UK and Johnson’s closeness to him was perceived as a potential electoral liability for the PM.

On Thursday, Johnson called the election ‘historic’ as he was announced the winner of his Uxbridge constituency in suburban London.

Johnson spoke shortly after rival Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn called Britain’s election result “very disappointing” for his party, but resisted pressure to step down right away.

Corbyn said the divisive issue of Brexit has “contributed to the result’.

Results poured in early Friday showing a substantial shift in support to the Conservatives from Labour. In the last election in 2017, the Conservatives won 318 seats and Labour 262.

The victory is set to make Johnson the most electorally successful Conservative leader since Margaret Thatcher – another politician who was loved and loathed in almost equal measure.
