Russia Claims Their Internet Can Work Even If Dropped From World Wide Web

Russia has completed a series of tests to conclude that their internet can work even if they’re cut off from the world wide web. Seems like Russia is already preparing for any cyberwar in the future. Their new mission is to have an internet service free from the world wide web.

Russian Deputy Communications Minister Aleksei Sokolov called this move a reaction of the “aggressive nature” of the US national cybersecurity strategy. The new service is a part of Russia’s “sovereign internet” bill that was introduced in November. Several measures and tests have been conducted by the authorities to make their internet safe from any possible threats.

If one day, the United States, United Kingdom, UAE or any other country for that matter, decides to declare cyber warfare and hinder their internet services, Russia will already have a safe haven. This new unassociated internet will help Russian to stay independent from the world wide web which has a notorious past of being able to be controlled by anyone. So, if tomorrow any said country like United States, China or any country decides to hack the world wide web and get hold of Russia’s internet services, Russia will have a plan B to fall upon.

“Our goal was to provide uninterrupted internet service on Russian territory under any circumstances,” Sokolov told a press conference.

“The outcomes of the review showed that government agencies and communications operators are ready to respond effectively to threats and to ensure the internet and communications operate effectively,” Sokolov added.

Why do you think this is important? India has been named as the country which is responsible for the most number of internet shutdowns, even more than China. In the last year, that is 2018, the Indian government barred the people from the internet more than 134 times. In this year, we have witnessed 103 internet shutdowns. Kashmir has been refused access to the internet for more than four months now. When asked about the shutdown, the officials say it will ‘keep the peace’ and unable other sources to access private information.

But if Russia successfully completes its mission to have internet services independent of the world wide web, the people would be able to access the internet even in desperate times. All we have to worry about now is the Russian influence this system might have.
