WhatsApp has finally announced the public rollout of dark mode — one of the most highly anticipated features that was supposed to come to the instant messaging app.
The dark mode support has been rolled out on both Android and iOS operating systems starting today and is functional on all handsets running on Android 10 and iOS 13 by default in sync with the smartphone’s system settings. Both Android and iOS users will be required to download the latest versions of the app from their App Store and Play Store to get the dark mode support.
For those Android users who have their devices running on Android 9.0 Pie and below, the option to enable dark mode is placed in the app’s settings. This is because there is no system wide support in these Android versions. In order to enable the dark mode, these Android users need to go to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Theme > select ‘Dark’.
However, that is not the case for iPhones that are running on iOS 12 or below as they will not get any such native support.
WhatsApp said that the company spent time “researching and experimenting” with a focus on readability and information hierarchy.
“When choosing colours, we wanted to minimise eye fatigue and use colours that are closer to the system defaults on iPhone and Android respectively. We wanted to help users easily focus their attention on each screen. We did this by using colour and other design elements to make sure the most important information stands out.”
While the dark mode on the iOS incorporates more Black tones, the same dark mode on the Android comprises a dark Gray color scheme.
